Why Sunflowers are yellow. As it grows, a sunflower will take in fluids and nutrients from the soil. Among these nutrients is a chemical known as a carotenoid. Inside carotenoid is an organic pigment called carotene. When carotene is absorbed it gives part of a plant, like sunflower petals, their yellow color.
